5 Simple ways to support our veterans

Published On: 08-Jun-2020

Many times we find people who want to contribute and serve the cause of Indian Armed Forces. Specially near to special days like Republic Day or Independence Day, our patriotic feelings fly high however this momentum fizzles out easily after a few days. The basic reason behind this issue is that many people want to do their bit however they do not know the ways. Today we are talking about some of the easiest ways to support our veterans of Indian Armed Forces.

1. Express your gratitude - The easiest way to support the fraternity is to express your gratitude. Whenever you find out that someone is an ex serviceman, say thanks and mean that. Your smile and gesture makes them realise that you acknowledge their service. Though it sounds very simple however this is always turned out to be one of the most effective ways.

2. Visit and talk - Having regular talks with the veterans , especially old age or disabled would be noble service. Being in touch with these veterans makes them feel like a family and proved to be great help for them.  Recently, during Corona caused lockdown, Panchkula Police gave birthday surprise to Col Karn Puri (Retd.), The veteran who has been living alone broke down and got emotional. This viral social media story brought laurels to Haryana Police.

3. Write a letter - Trust this, it's kind of a miracle, most of the veterans serve their last years in kind of isolation. They really feel good if somebody writes them. If you send them handwritten greetings on important days, in the age of social media/email communication, it can easily make anyone feel special. It's kind of a feeling that somebody is there who thinks about them.

4. Become a volunteer -  Another way to serve our veterans is join the cause by becoming a volunteer. In India, there are many Non Governmental Organsiations are working for the cause of veterans of Indian Armed Forces. Do make yourself available and assist them to serve the community. Donating your time would be real help. Braveheart Soldier Foundation welcomes volunteers to support and lead various welfare activities

5. Contribute towards the funds - if you don't have time to indulge any kind of above stated activities but have zeal to serve veterans of Indian Army, you may donate funds to organisations which are set up by various government and non government organisations.  For example, such organisation are Army Central Welfare Fund and Army Battle Casualties Welfare Fund, Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre, Kirkee etc. you may donate your contribution online. A little contribution to such funds will be a great contribution in helping the veterans for their betterment.

There are numerous other ways of connecting and assisting our veterans of Indian Army, which can be adopted by all of us. No matter what kind of activity you opt, your small deeds of kindness or acknowledgment, make a difference.
